Towns' Urban Crime Resolution Passes House

WASHINGTON - U.S. Rep. Edolphus Towns (NY-10) has sought to draw attention to the plight of victims of urban crime by introducing a new resolution, H.Con.Res 227, paying homage to them and recognizing the work of law enforcement, health professionals and community organizations dedicated to eradicating crime in urban communities across the country. The resolution, which passed the U.S. House of Representatives unanimously early last week, will designate the second week of February 2010 as “National Urban Crimes Awareness Week.”

“Many urban communities are already battling a myriad of social ills, including high unemployment rates and deteriorating community infrastructure," said Towns. "I am proud that my colleagues joined me in remembering the numerous victims of urban crime and honoring those who work on the front lines everyday to put an end to the cycle of violence that plagues urban communities.”
